A closer look at three jobs
case study 01
1973 Seiko automatic — inherited from a relative
the situation
A client brought in her late uncle's automatic dress watch. It had not been worn or wound in approximately twelve years. The movement stopped completely after brief running; the mainspring appeared to have lost tension quickly after winding.
the approach
Full movement service — strip-down revealed dried lubricants throughout and a worn keyless works. The mainspring was not damaged but required replacement of several small parts. Ultrasonic cleaning, fresh lubricants, and replacement components sourced from a Japanese parts supplier.
the outcome
After a four-day timing observation the movement settled to approximately −8 seconds per day — well within the expected range for a 1970s automatic. The client chose not to have the case polished, which preserved the original brushed surface. Completed in three weeks.

case study 02
1960s Swiss pocket watch — collector restoration
the situation
A collector brought in a Swiss-made pocket watch with a cylinder escapement — an older design no longer in common use. The piece had significant sentimental and collector interest but had not run for many years. Several wheel teeth were damaged.
the approach
Vintage restoration. Movement stripped and documented photographically before cleaning. Damaged wheel was sourced through a Swiss parts specialist — this took five weeks to arrive. Case cleaned sympathetically; no polishing on the engraved surfaces. Movement reassembled, timed, and documented.
the outcome
The watch now runs consistently. Given the design of the cylinder escapement, the rate is approximately −20 seconds per day — accurate within what the mechanism can produce. The client has a photographic record of the entire process and a detailed written report. Total time: nine weeks.

case study 03
Daily-wear diver — water-resistance failure
the situation
An owner noticed condensation inside the crystal of his diver watch after swimming. Moisture had entered the case; the dial was showing signs of humidity damage. The watch was still running but the movement was at risk.
the approach
Case opened; moisture found in the dial area but the movement itself was dry. Crown gasket and case-back gasket both replaced. Movement inspected for corrosion — none found. Case sealed and water-resistance tested to its rated depth equivalent.
the outcome
Movement remained serviceable. Case fully sealed; test showed no pressure loss. Completed in two days. Client advised on how often to have gaskets checked on a watch used in water regularly. A battery replacement and gasket inspection service was scheduled for the following year.
